Use the information from the Presentation in class and the reading of the suggested papers to write down a proposal to improve your students' motivation.
MOTIVATION PROPOSAL. I am going to propose a dynamic activity to improve students’ motivation. The activity will consist on am interview for job. The teacher will be the interviewer and the student will be the person who is looking for a job. Every student will have a time of 2 or 3 minutes to answer the questions that the teacher will ask her/him. The rest of the class will have to pay attention to the interview that is having place. They will have to write the mistakes that they think their classmate has made. They also will be required to write the positive point of that interview. The mistakes will be shown afterward the activity to try to improve it. In this kind of activity students are required to know the useful adjectives to describe their own personality. They are also required to know the mechanism of question-answer. The will care their pronunciation too, although the most important thing will be the message that they transmit to the teacher. There must be communication. I think that this kind of activities make the student to be more motivated than the typical activities of writing or fill in the gaps. Students could have made up an interview and written it, but I think that my proposed activity is better to improve students’ motivation and to help to students to enjoy the classes.
I am going to propose a kind of activities to improve my students’ motivation. In some weeks of the year, I will propose them a series of films from cinema that they could like. Amongst those films, the students will vote and the film selected by the majority of the votes will be the excuse to work on the speaking, listening, reading and writing sessions of that week. Due to the fact that the film is going to be liked by the majority of the class, the sessions will be more motivating than if they were about a topic that they have not selected. I will ask them to see the film if they have the possibility to make the classes easier for them. On the speaking session we will have a debate moderated by me in which we will talk about the film through questions that I will ask them. They will be free to give their opinion and they will have to respect the rest of the opinions of their mates. On the listening session I will try to take some fragments of the film (if the whole film is not possible) in the original version with subtitles in English to make them listen to native people speaking in English. They will have to show that they have understood the fragment by answering me a number of questions that I will make after seeing the film. On the reading session, I will give them some critics of the film that they will read with their couples (A&B groups). After reading it, I will ask them to write their own critic answering to that one they have read saying what do they think about the film. On the writing session, I will ask them to write an essay on what we have been doing throughout the previous lessons and on their own opinion on the film. After they have finished to write their essays, they will exchange their productions with a partner and they will correct each other. After that correction, they will give the essays to me and I will correct them completing them if something is missing in their corrections.
In this post I will talk about how I would take care of my students’ motivation.
I think it would be fine if I dedicate some hours at the beginning of each term to think about what topic I am going to deal with through the lessons. For doing that, I will ask them about that, but also I will prepare other topics that had not been said before.
Taking into account that the majority of the students feel ashamed of speaking up in class, I will mainly focus the motivation on speaking skills.
They will know when we are working on each topic proposed before in order to get them prepared and to have the opportunity to talk about them with his/her classmates before classes.
But, by my side, I will tell them that there is an activity called ‘Braking News’ that will take place along the year and we will work on it unexpectedly. I will use for this session the most current piece of news I could find. For instance, if I were teaching right now, I could use the earthquakes that are taking place around the world as a topic. For that, I could use headlines or real news videos taken from Youtube or other web pages.
The activities will be done as a debate. I, as a teacher, will try not to correct in case they do any mistakes when speaking, but I will dedicate the last five minutes to give an overview of the mistakes that have been made. Moreover, I will try to make all of them participate by asking questions if any of them seem to feel uncomfortable or ashamed.
